![]() ![]() ![]() In the course of this project, we developed and analyzed advanced fuel assembly designs with improved thermal transmutation capability regarding transuranic elements and especially minor actinides. Nevertheless, these designs are not effective in stabilizing or reducing the inventory of minor actinides. Current light water reactor fuel assembly designs under investigation could reduce the plutonium inventory of reprocessed fuel. The reprocessing of spent nuclear fuel can delay or avoid the need for a second geological repository in the US. The objective of the project is to design and analyze advanced fuel assemblies for use in current and future light water reactors and to assess their ability to reduce the inventory of transuranic elements, while preserving operational safety. ![]()
